“Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”
- Robert Brault
Now that I’ve been married for a little over a year now, naturally, I feel like an expert on all things married… Okay, maybe not an expert, but I can dole out a little advice! Your first year of marriage will FLY by. Cherish the little moments because it is these little moments that make life big. Here is a little top ten list I’ve prepared to give you some ideas to help create your little moments:
10. Take a class together! Whether it is a painting, a photography, or a scuba lesson, learning something new together. No doubt it will lead to some laughs and maybe even a new hobby!
9. Go to an amusement park and act like kids. Y’all are entirely too close to Disneyland to not take advantage. Ride roller coasters and wear fanny packs. Well, I guess you don’t have to wear fanny packs, but should you choose to, please take pictures for my personal enjoyment.
8. I know you two are avid hikers. Go back to the very first place you ever hiked together. If you have a way to keep it cold, bring a bottle of Champagne and toast to your past and future journeys together!
7. Go on a road trip together (to Disneyland or a hike, perhaps? ). Make a mixed CD of all your favorite songs. Nothing makes you really talk to one another like being stuck in a car together. The only rule is you can’t talk to anyone else (unless it’s a gas station attendant or something), so turn your cellphones off.
6. Accomplish a fun home DIY project. Strolling through Home Depot or Lowe’s is half the fun! Because you are now head of the decorating committee, you can pick the project!
5. Have dessert for dinner. Order all your favorites, and go all out!
4. Volunteer to work on a cause you both believe in on a Saturday afternoon. I personally recommend working with the underprivileged. Sometimes we have what others deal with to see how truly blessed we are. Perspective is always needed.
3. Go to a wedding! Hold hands during the vows. It’s kind of like renewing without all the fuss. J If you don’t know anyone getting married, might I recommend crashing one? Make up a story and everything – it was really funny when Vince Vaughn did it.
2. Pick up some magazines at Lowe’s or Home Depot (you know, when you’re there planning your DIY project). Plan your dream house together - no matter how unrealistic the plan. It’s fun to dream together. We should all make a habit of it.
1. On the BIG date night, the ONE YEAR mark, no matter where you are or what you are doing, eat the top tier of your wedding cake and look at the wedding video or photos. Remember the day and how wonderful and special it was. Remember the vows, the little moments, and the genuine happiness you felt on that day. May you be as happy as that day for always.
I love you, Whit! I’m so happy for you, and The Linda said it best when she said this is the happiest she’s ever seen you! I hope your first year in marriage is the best year you’ve had yet.
xoxo,
JL (wife extraordinaire)
