Inspired by
Elements of an Image, I decided to write a little note to my former high school self. Aside from releasing many emotions of my own, I hope this little exercise will help as I enter my coaching position...
Dear High School WC,
I wish I could tell you that your life runs smoothly from here on out, but unfortunately that is just not the case. While you will face some incredibly difficult situations, remember to keep your head up because you will indeed come out ahead and it only makes you stronger as a person.
Here are a few key points to help make things easier:
- your friends now will not be your true friends...those will come in college and they will be the definition of real, true, best friends
- the thing you are promising yourself that will never happen to you will in fact happen...brace yourself because it will hurt like hell and it will take you awhile to recover; but the good news is that you do recover
- you and Kendahl will become close and she will share a secret with you long before she tells mom; you, in turn, will lean on her for advice as you get older
- you will travel and see a whole lot of world; take it all in and cherish those moments as you are lucky to have that opportunity
- you will falter and try things that are not particularly good for you; you will be judged by people who are your so-called friends; don't judge back
- you will feel like you disappointed your parents but you didn't; they will actually feel like they let you down and couldn't protect you
- the four of you siblings eventually grow up (slightly) and learn to get along; all of the teasing is in good fun and they always have your back. ALWAYS.
- you will adopt the most adorable puppy in the world; he will be your saving grace at a very low point in your life
- you will graduate from college and graduate school in 5 years; magnum cum laude; you get a 100% on your sport law final resulting in no curve for your classmates
- tennis will always be a part of your life and ironically will serve as a way to make you feel at home when you are clear on the other coast
- you will fall in love with a man, not a boy; you already know him; when it all happens, you will fully understand why your motto has always been "everything happens for a reason"; literally, you will feel the work of God
- your smile will be one of your greatest assets; everywhere you go, people will remark about how much they love it; smile often
- despite your life plan, it will not go according to how you imagined; you will be 28 and will not be a mother; you will not have a set career; you will not own a home; remember that you didn't fail as you have accomplished so much and touched many a lives throughout your journey
- lastly, don't forget to believe; in God, in your family, in yourself
With Love,
28 year old WC, almost WT
